When to visit Madonna di Campiglio: the month-by-month guide

The best time to visit Madonna di Campiglio depends on what you're after. For skiing, December to March. For spring sun on the snow, March. For cool air and hiking trails when the cities are sweltering, June to September.

Madonna di Campiglio has two full seasons, winter and summer, and two quieter in-between ones, spring and autumn. The gap between one month and the next is wider than you would think.

Winter in Madonna di Campiglio (December to March)

The ski season runs from late November to mid-April. The full months are December, January and February; March is the one few people expect.

Campiglio's winter advantage is that you ski from the village. The lifts start in the centre, and the linked ski area covers more than 150 km of slopes on a single ski pass, across Campiglio, Pinzolo and Folgarida-Marilleva. From a ski-in/ski-out hotel right on the slopes, you are on your skis in the morning, with no car and no ski bus.

December and the holidays

December is the holiday month, and it shows. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks of winter, with the village decorated and the slopes already running.

If you are aiming for this period, book well ahead. The 18 suites fill up fast.

January and February: peak season

January and February are the months with the most reliable snow and the most people. This is the height of the ski season: dry cold, every lift open, events in the village.

March: the most underrated month

March is the most underrated month of the year in Madonna di Campiglio. The snow is still good, the sun is warmer, the days are longer and the slopes are freer than over the holidays.

It is the month for skiing at your own pace. Ski in the morning, lunch in the sun on the terrace, a walk in the afternoon. And after a day on the snow, the pool and the sauna make a lot of sense.

Spring in Madonna di Campiglio: April and May

Spring changes the face of Madonna di Campiglio. In April the snow holds up high until mid-month and you get the last runs in, then the thaw sets in.

May is the quietest month of the year. The high trails are still closed by snow, but the valley floor turns green and the Vallesinella and Val Genova waterfalls run at their fullest, swollen with meltwater. The lifts are off and there are very few people around.

Summer in Madonna di Campiglio (June to September): the cool of the Dolomites

In summer Madonna di Campiglio stays cool even in July and August. At 1,550 metres, while cities and beaches bake, the air up here is mountain air: it is why more and more people head up in the hottest months.

Step out of the hotel and you are already in the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, with around 450 km of trails. Paths leave from the village, the cable cars run from mid-June to September, and the concierge builds the itinerary to fit: you will find a few ideas among the mountain experiences we offer.

July and August

July and August are the cool months when it is stifling elsewhere. Everything is open, mountain huts included, and the days are long.

August is the height of summer, the time of families and the biggest crowds. July is just a little quieter, with the same climate and more room on the trails.

September

September has the best light of the year. The air is clear, the colours turn, the pace slows: it is the month for those who want to walk and rest without the crowds.

For a couple after some quiet, or anyone who loves photographing the mountains, it is perhaps the finest of the four.

Autumn in Madonna di Campiglio: October and November

In autumn the woods of the Val Rendena light up. In October the larches turn golden, the air is clear and there are few people: it is the season of foliage and low-altitude walks, with the first dusting of snow on the Brenta peaks.

November brings the cold and the first real snow. The mountain gets ready for the ski season and the village finds its quiet again before the holidays.

When to go by type of traveller

The quietest weeks are spring and late autumn, when the valley is in transition. Among the months with everything open, the quietest are the shoulder ones: March, June and September.

These are usually the months with gentler rates too, compared with the holidays and peak season, with snow or trails in the same condition. The seasonal offers change through the year.
