How to get to Madonna di Campiglio: airports, trains, car and transfers

The closest airport with international flights is Verona, 160 kilometres away. From there it is a little over two hours by road. Long-haul travellers usually land at Venice or Malpensa, the two intercontinental hubs, and should allow just over three hours. By train you can get as far as Trento: the last 74 kilometres have no rail service and are covered by bus or transfer. The private transfer is something we arrange for you, on request.

Madonna di Campiglio sits at just over 1,500 metres, at the head of Val Rendena. It has no railway station and no motorway exit within an hour. That is why this question almost always comes up before booking rather than after. The good news is that once you are here, the car can stay parked for the whole week.

Which airport is best for Madonna di Campiglio?

It depends on where you are flying from. For intercontinental flights there are two hubs, Venice and Milan Malpensa: from either one the drive is a little over three hours. If you are flying within Europe, the most convenient are Verona, Milan Linate and Bergamo Orio al Serio, with Verona cutting the road leg the most. Bolzano is the closest of all and works mainly with private jets.

Verona

Valerio Catullo airport is 160 kilometres away, a little over two hours. You take the A22 Brenner motorway northbound, exit at Trento Sud and continue towards Sarche, Tione and Pinzolo. It is the easiest option for anyone arriving from elsewhere in Europe without connections, and the one that shortens the mountain stretch the most.

Milan: Malpensa, Linate and Bergamo

Malpensa (250 km) is, together with Venice, the intercontinental gateway: if you are coming from the United States or the Gulf, that is almost always where you land. Linate (230 km) is closer than it looks and saves you crossing Milan. Bergamo Orio al Serio (180 km) is the best compromise in terms of time, and is served by many European low cost carriers. From all three you travel along the A4 to Brescia Est, then Lago d'Idro, Tione and Pinzolo.

Venice, Innsbruck and Bolzano

Venice Marco Polo (250 km, about 3 h 15) is the other major long-haul hub alongside Malpensa, and the natural choice if the Dolomites are the second leg of a trip that starts on the lagoon. Innsbruck (225 km) is the gateway for anyone arriving from Germany or Austria and coming down the A22. Bolzano Dolomiti (105 km) is the closest of all: it handles private jets and SkyAlp flights, which connect the airport with the main European cities.

How does the private airport transfer work?

We arrange it ourselves, on request and at a charge, to and from Malpensa, Orio al Serio, Verona, Bolzano and Venice. Just mention it when you book, or write to the front desk with your flight number and time: the driver meets you on arrival and drops you at the entrance.

If you are after something cheaper there is FlySki Shuttle, the shared service run by the tourist board, which in winter connects the airports of Verona, Bergamo, Milan Linate, Venice and Treviso and Trento station with Madonna di Campiglio. It costs less, but it only runs on Saturdays and Sundays and drops you at a stop in the village rather than at the hotel: the last stretch has to be arranged separately.

Can you get to Madonna di Campiglio by train?

As far as Trento, yes. Beyond that, no. There is no station in the village and there never has been: the last 74 kilometres are covered by road. It is worth saying plainly, because it is the first thing anyone discovers when they try to buy a ticket all the way to Campiglio and cannot find one.

There are two combinations that genuinely work.

• The first: train to Trento, then the scheduled B201 bus from the coach station, about a hundred metres from the railway station. The route passes through Sarche, Tione and Pinzolo and takes around two hours.
• The second: train to Trento, then the Trento-Malé railway to Dimaro, 17 kilometres from us, and the bus from there.

If you are travelling from Rome, Florence, Bologna or Verona you can buy a single Frecciarossa plus bus ticket with FrecciaLink: you get off at Trento and continue by coach to Pinzolo and Madonna di Campiglio, without having to line up two separate bookings.

Getting to Madonna di Campiglio by car

• From Milan and the west. A4 motorway to the Brescia Est exit, then Lago d'Idro, Tione, Pinzolo and Madonna di Campiglio.
• From Verona, Modena and the south. A22 Brenner motorway to the Trento Sud exit, then Sarche, Tione, Pinzolo and Madonna di Campiglio.
• From Innsbruck and the north. A22 motorway to the San Michele all'Adige exit, then Cles, Marilleva, Folgarida and Madonna di Campiglio.

Times from the motorway exit are not the same for everyone. From Brescia Est allow about two hours. From Trento Sud and San Michele all'Adige, about an hour and a quarter. What you need for winter driving

In the province of Trento, from 15 November to 15 April, all vehicles must either be fitted with winter tyres or carry snow chains on board, on every state and provincial road. The requirement applies even on dry tarmac in full sunshine.

Roads in Trentino are well maintained all year round: when it snows they are cleared continuously, and around Campiglio the attention is greater still. What is needed from you is simply to comply with the winter requirement: from mid-November to April, winter tyres fitted or chains on board.

Do you need a car in Madonna di Campiglio?

Given how the village is laid out, no. The centre is walkable, the lift departures are inside the village rather than outside it, and over a week most of our guests do not touch the car until the day they leave.

At the Chalet del Sogno the question does not even arise: from the heated ski room you step straight out on your skis and a few paces later you are at the Spinale Express gondola, which climbs to 2,100 metres in six minutes and opens up the whole SkiArea Campiglio Dolomiti di Brenta. The centre is a five-minute walk away.

In summer nothing changes. The main lifts stay open and take you up to altitude, to the trailheads and to the outdoor activities. But you can also set off straight from the hotel, on foot for superb walks or on a bike, without moving the car.

For getting around the resort in winter there is an organised skibus service between northern and southern Campiglio. From the Chalet del Sogno it is not needed. In summer, meanwhile, an excellent sustainable mobility service runs to the valleys of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, such as Vallesinella and Val Genova.
